About This Service

Replace Your Old Fuse Box With a Modern Consumer Unit

Your consumer unit (fuse box) is what protects you and your home from electric shock and electrical fires. Older fuse boards often have no RCD protection, use rewireable fuses, or are housed in plastic enclosures that no longer meet current regulations.

CT Electrical replaces old fuse boxes with modern consumer units across Dudley, Kingswinford, Stourbridge and the Black Country. Every upgrade is tested, certified and notified to building control under Part P through our NICEIC registration.

Modern Protection

What a New Consumer Unit Gives You

A modern consumer unit adds RCD protection, which disconnects the supply in a fraction of a second if there's a fault to earth, plus surge protection and clearly labelled circuits so you know exactly what each breaker controls.

Since 2016, consumer units in homes have had to be made of non-combustible material, typically metal. Older plastic units aren't automatically unsafe, but they don't meet current regulations.

Is It Time?

Signs You Need a Consumer Unit Upgrade

Not every older consumer unit needs replacing straight away, and we won't tell you it does if it doesn't. An inspection will show whether your existing board is still safe and suitable.

Time to Upgrade If…

  • You have rewireable fuses instead of circuit breakers
  • There's no RCD protection on your circuits
  • Your EICR recommended a replacement
  • Breakers trip often or the board feels warm
  • You're adding an EV charger, solar PV or an extension
Certified Work

Installed, Tested & Certified

Before fitting a new consumer unit we test the existing circuits, because a new board can expose faults the old one was hiding. Any issues are explained to you before work continues.

You'll receive an Electrical Installation Certificate, and the work is notified to building control under Part P.

Got Questions?

Consumer Unit FAQs

How do I know if I need a new consumer unit?

You may need one if your board uses rewireable fuses, has no RCD protection, has been flagged on an EICR, or you're adding an EV charger or solar PV. An inspection will confirm whether replacement is needed.

Does a consumer unit replacement need to be certified?

Yes. Replacing a consumer unit is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations. As an NICEIC Approved contractor we certify the work and notify building control for you.

Do consumer units have to be metal?

Since 2016, BS 7671 has required consumer units in domestic premises to be made of non-combustible material, which in practice means metal enclosures. Existing plastic units don't automatically need replacing, but new installations must comply.

How long does a consumer unit replacement take?

Most domestic replacements are completed in a day, with the power off for part of that time. Faults found on existing circuits during testing can add time — we'll always explain this first.

Can you upgrade my consumer unit for an EV charger?

Yes. As OZEV Authorised installers we can check your supply and upgrade the consumer unit as part of an EV charger installation where needed.
