7 Warning Signs Your Consumer Unit Needs Replacing
Your consumer unit (fuse board) is the heart of your home's electrical system — and like anything that works hard behind the scenes, it sends out warning signs long before it fails completely. Here are seven signs worth taking seriously.
1. It's still a fuse box, not a modern consumer unit
Older rewireable fuse boxes and plastic consumer units without RCD protection don't meet current safety standards. If yours predates around 2016, it's worth having it assessed.
2. Breakers trip repeatedly for no obvious reason
Occasional trips are normal (an overloaded circuit, a faulty appliance). Frequent, unexplained trips usually point to a deeper fault worth investigating properly.
3. Burning smells or visible scorch marks
This is not a wait-and-see sign. A burning smell near your consumer unit is one of the few electrical issues that warrants an immediate call, not a booked-in visit.
4. Warm or discoloured switches and sockets
Heat where there shouldn't be any is a classic early warning sign of a loose connection or overloaded circuit.
5. No RCD protection
Residual Current Devices are what actually save lives in the event of a fault — cutting power in milliseconds. If your board doesn't have them, it's a genuine safety gap, not just an inconvenience.
6. You're planning an extension, EV charger, or major appliance upgrade
Adding significant new load to an old board is often the moment small existing weaknesses become real problems. Worth checking capacity before, not after.
7. It's been 10+ years since it was last inspected
An EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) will tell you definitively whether your consumer unit and wider installation are safe, rather than leaving it to guesswork.
What to do next
If any of the above sound familiar, a proper inspection is the right first step — not necessarily a replacement. We offer free, no-obligation consumer unit assessments across Dudley, Kingswinford, and the wider West Midlands, and we're NICEIC Approved so any work is certified to current regulations.
